The Nutcracker

A magical dolls house, an evil governess and a nutcracker doll who may just be a handsome prince in disguise - this winter, prepare to enter a magical new world…

Following on from the hugely successful productions of Cinderella and The Sleeping Beauty comes a revival of Artistic Director Ashley Page’s The Nutcracker, a sweet yet deliciously sharp take
on ETA Hoffmann’s original story Nutcracker and the King of Mice.

One Christmas Eve, Marie hears the story of a brave nutcracker who saves a princess from a horrible curse, and as she sleeps, she is transported into a surreal dream world where she must learn to fend for herself and discover the secret of true love.

This fresh and vivid retelling of the famous Christmas story features stunning sets and costumes from international designer Antony McDonald, breathtaking choreography, Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous score played live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra and the phenomenally talented, passionate dancers of Scotland’s national dance company.

'Claire Robertson's spirited Marie is an expressive mix of vulnerability and determination - utterly deserving of Erik Cavallari’s noble Prince, their closing pas-de-deux a radiant outpouring of consummate partnering worth a galaxy of stars in itself.'
The Herald
'It presents the ballet’s final pas de deux (between the tale’s young lovers, danced exquisitely by Erik Cavallari and Claire Robertson) with a beautifully executed classicism which exemplifies the style and intelligence of this, another fabulously successful Scottish Ballet Christmas show.'

The Daily Telegraph
'The Nutcracker that Ashley Page and Antony McDonald contrived for Scottish Ballet was, and still is, something of a trailblazer. In 2003, this bold, inventive Nutcracker signified that Scottish Ballet was dancing its way out of the woods. It looks even better now.'
The Herald
'Sheer balletic beauty. The tutu-clad snowflakes and pretty poppy flowers deliver pointe work to die for, while the grand pas-de-deux between principal dancers Claire Robertson and Erik Cavallari is a spell-binding blend of romance and masterful technique.'
The Scotsman
'This is one Nutcracker you could sample again and again’
