Intermezzo Richard Strauss Based on real-life exchanges in his own home, the libretto for Intermezzo was written by Strauss himself, fictionalising his volatile relationship with his wife. Set in the 1920s, it captures the flaws and foibles of high society with Oscar Wilde-like wit, and no small hint of irony. The conductor Richard Storch and his wife, Christine, are not getting on. When Christine intercepts a love letter apparently addressed to her husband she leaps to the obvious conclusion, but has she jumped the gun? Flirtations with penniless barons, confusingly similar names, the mysterious Mitzi Meyer...it all adds up to some stormy misunderstandings and more than a little confusion. This intimate and elegant comedy of manners maintains the full, rich sounds of Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier and Salome. Marking Scottish Opera's return to German repertoire for the first time since 2006, this new production has been created by a team hand-picked by Music Director Francesco Corti: director Wolfgang Quetes, designer Manfred Kaderk and leading German soprano Anita Bader. Roland Wood, a regular company favourite, sings the role of Robert Storch.
