Cie Zahrbat

UK première

Cie Zahrbat

(Algeria / France)

This evening comprises two pieces: Zahrbat (solo) and El Firak (duet)

With Brahim Bouchelaghem, it's about more than dance, it's about life.  In these two exquisite solos, his virtuoso mastery of hip-hop gives him the freedom to bare his soul.

Zahrbat
'With his first solo Zahrbat, Bouchelaghem pays emotive tribute to his late father who left Algeria to work in France and was an unrepentant card player. ….. his subdued break dancing is the dance equivalent of him sobbing on your shoulder.' Midi Libre

El Firak
El Firak - The Separation. Brahim shows how, as a child, he was split between two worlds and forced to make a choice when his heart was really on both sides. The two personalities that are El Firak move between loneliness and the struggle to rejoin each other despite their differences.   Brahmin uses contrasting dance styles to symbolize this divide - one of complete power, the other of flexibility.

Cie Zahrbat share their evening with a curtain raiser by performers from the boys' dance project which takes place throughout Surrey, led by Woking Dance Festival and Surrey Arts.  The boys will create a work which responds to Brahmin's duet, El Firak.
