Mathilde Monnier and members of her company have worked for 4 weeks with over 60 people from in and around Woking to create this inspiring production. City Maquette brings together four diverse groups comprising martial artists, primary school children, teenagers and older dancers to create an incredible production which reflects their personal relationship to Woking as a place to learn live and work.

Choreographer Mathilde Monnier, director of the Centre Chorégraphique National de Montpellier Languedoc-Rousillon since 1994, thrives on the unexpected. ‘Entertainment bores me,’ Monnier said recently, ‘I like what troubles and challenges; when you feel that someone has tried something new; not just presented a pretty picture’. She has a reputation for constantly pushing the boundaries of her art form; working on cross-art form collaborations with writers, philosophers and musicians. It is this innovative approach to dance and collaboration that led Mathilde Monnier to the project Surrogate Cities, composed by Heiner Goebbels, with Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Simon Rattle, from which City Maquette was born.

City Maquette was originally performed in Montpellier in 2007.
