All roads will lead to Richmond this Christmas, as Brian Blessed, the booming thespian with the inimitable voice that the public demanded for their driving directions is also announced as the star of Richmond Theatre's pantomime Sleeping Beauty, sponsored by Robinsons. The accomplished actor is best known for film and television roles, such as Prince Vultan in Flash Gordon, the mad, comic figure of Richard IV in the first series of The Black Adder, his portrayal of the father of Robin Hood, Lord Locksley, in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and for his appearances in Shakespeare films directed by Kenneth Branagh: as The Duke of Exeter in Henry V (1989), Antonio in Much Ado About Nothing (1993), The Ghost of Hamlet's Father in Hamlet (1996) and the dual role of Duke Frederick and Duke Senior in As You Like It (2006). Brian Blessed will be joined by another seasoned pantomime performer, as Richmond favourite Tim Vine returns to play the joker once again. Those who recall Tim Vine's hilariously witty performance last year will be familiar with his fast-paced wit and brilliant comic timing. Another welcome return is that of Fenton Gray, who directed Peter Pan at Richmond in 2008-2009 and will be returning to the role of director as well as appearing on-stage as the Panto Dame, being cast as the Nurse. Completing the star cast are Sophie Isaacs, who has been cast as Beauty and Jon Robyns as the Prince. This year's pantomime guarantees show-stopping song and dance, larger than life characters, colourful costumes and spectacular sparkling sets.
